Barko Vinum is a family-owned company founded in 1995 by Peter Mihalko in the wine region near Brekov. It is the oldest vineyard in northern Slovakia and at the same time the northernmost area where grapevine is grown. Currently, Barko Vinum owns two vineyards: Viničná hora and Gečova, both located in the region of Brekov. There are ruins of Brekov Castle - Castrum Barko. The castle was built in the 13th century; according to historical sources, grapevines have been grown in the area since the 15th century. The name of the wine company of the Mihalko family derives from the name of the castle. The Mihalko family started to grown grapevines in 1995. At that time, the existing Viničná hora vineyard covered 20 hectares, but unfortunately it was neglected. Initially, Barko Vinum had 12 ares from this vineyard, located on the southern slope of a gentle slope (140-160 m above sea level). In 1998, another part of the vineyard was purchased from the descendants of the original owners. The plot was planted with the Müller-Thurgau variety. At that time, the rows of Tramín red, Svätovavrinecké and Iršaj oliver were also rented. In 2000, the first saplings were planted. Rizling vlašský variety was the one to be chosen. It brought wonderful harvest and first vintage wines in 2003. Currently, the vineyard covers an area of 2.83 ha. In 2003, a decision to set up a new vineyard in the part of Brechla chotár called Gecova was made. It covers an area of 2.8 ha located on the gentle, southern slopes of hills stretching at an altitude of 135-137 m above sea level. In Gecova, approx. 5000 shrubs are grown, they include the following varieties: Frankovka modrá, Cabernet sauvignon, Chardonnay, Sauvignon blanc. In this way, vintage wines were obtained from the harvest in 2006. The vineyard produces white, red and rose vintage grape wines, which have a wide range of supporters. These wines won many national and international competitions, i.e. international competitions Vino Bojnice, Vino Tokaj, Murvina in Prešov. The vineyard provides services from the field of enotourism, i.e. commented tastings and tours. There is a possibility of visits both for individual guests and organised groups. Touring around the vineyard is possible only upon prior arrangement with the owner. Tastings are available for groups of 30 people, perfect for groups of 15 people, with the possibility of accommodation in the nearby town of Strazske, next to Humenné.
